Maul Was One of The Reasons Why Palpatine Really Saved Anakin on Mustafar

Star Wars fans might think that the creation of Darth Vader the reason why Palpatine saved Anakin after suffering critical injuries towards the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, however, it also had to do with Darth Maul.

While the creation of Vader was the main reason why Palpatine saved Anakin, Star Wars: The Clone Wars adds another interesting layer to the Emperor's decision to salvage the Jedi's broken and burnt body on Mustafar.

According to Star Wars voice actor Sam Witwer, it also had to do with Maul (via Screen Rant). Apparently, Maul had made a lasting impression on Palpatine when he returned even though everyone thought him to be dead. Not only that, but the former Sith Lord became a key player in the galactic conflict.

Screen Rant explains how Palpatine knew that Anakin had far more potential than Maul, and so, the Emperor couldn't leave the Jedi to die after his battle with Obi-Wan. Palpatine then decided to give Anakin the best cybernetic experts to figure how to keep him alive, turning him into the heavy-breathing Sith Lord that fans fear and respect – Darth Vader.

When he had completed Anakin's physical transformation, Palpatine put Vader to the test, wanting to see whether the former Jedi would be worthy of becoming his apprentice. Not only are these tests found in Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp, but they're also found in the second Darth Vader series by Charles Soule.

Of course, Palpatine could have also planned Anakin's transformation all along. The Sith Lord must have known Anakin's potential – turning the former Jedi Knight into Darth Vader was probably always in Darth Sidious's mind.

The Skywalker saga is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
