Martin Scorsese Doesn’t Consider Marvel Movies 'Cinema'

The Marvel Cinematic Universe might be one of the most successful interconnected film franchises in Hollywood today, but Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Chris director Martin Scorsese doesn't really see Marvel comic book movies as "cinema."

Speaking in an interview with Empire (via ComicBook.com) to help promote the upcoming movie The Irishman, the prolific director and producer was asked about his thoughts on the thriving comic book movie genre and the strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Apparently, Scorsese tried his best to understand Marvel movies, however, the director failed, saying that he really can't think of comic book movies as theme parks.

"I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema," Scorsese told Empire. "Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."

Comments like these aren't entirely new of course. We've heard others saying that Marvel movies aren't exactly Oscar Worthy material. It doesn't seem like Marvel minds lacking awards though. The studio has previously said that it's more concerned with engaging its fans than trying to please the judges at the Oscars or at other major film award-giving bodies.

It doesn't mean that Marvel hasn't tried though. The studio got so close last year with Ryan Coogler's Black Panther becoming the first ever comic book movie to get nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
