Martin Scorsese caused quite a ruckus when he came out and revealed that he didn't think of Marvel movies as "cinema," instead he called the blockbuster films as "amusement parks" for fans. Not only did were Marvel celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. asked to address Scorsese's comments outsiders like Jennifer Aniston and Francis Ford Coppola decided to defend the Taxi Driver director's opinion, sharing thoughts of their own about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The critically-acclaimed director of films like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now decided to join the bandwagon earlier this week, saying that Scorsese was being kind with his comments about Marvel movies. Coppola wasn't afraid to be with direct, saying that Scorsese was right when he said that Marvel movies weren't cinema, they were downright "despicable."
Avengers: Endgame star Mark Ruffalo has decided to stand up for the franchise by responding to Coppola's comments about Marvel movies. In a now-deleted tweet, the Hulk actor pointed out the generational gap between Coppola and those who love moves from the MCU.
"Back in the day, people thought rock 'n' roll and hip-hop weren't music and despicable too," the actor tweeted in response to an article discussing Coppola's comments (via ComicBook.com).
To each his own, really. Sure, Marvel movies might not be as high brow as some might want them to be, but they offer viewers respite and entertainment. Sometimes, that's all you really need after a difficult week. Everyone has their own different taste. We can't judge Scorsese and Coppolla for liking what they like. We can't judge Marvel fans either.
