Mark Hamill Was “Surprised” By The Outrage Over Snoke’s Fate In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have enjoyed commercial and critical success during its release last year, however the film still had its collection of haters.

Though there were many who appreciated the risks taken by The Last Jedi, some fans were aggressively against the film's decision to subvert fan expectations, one of which included the fate of Supreme Leader Snoke in The Force Awakens sequel. Though some feel naturally upset by how Snoke was so easily disposed of in the sequel trilogy installment, Mark Hamill understands that the Supreme Leader of the First Order wasn't that important in The Last Jedi.

"I relate to the fans because I'm a fan myself," Hamill said in an interview with Games Radar. "I understand that they have a deep investment, a sense of ownership, because I do too and the problem is, you just can't please everyone… I was surprised everyone was so upset that they got rid of Snoke. From Rian's point of view, it was a big favorite for [Episode IX] because he's not important. It clears the deck to have the conflict between Kylo and Rey without him getting in the way and having to explain if he's a clone or if he's related to Palpatine – all that stuff."

Snoke's insignificance came as quite a surprise to the Star Wars fanbase. There were so many theories about Snoke's possible origin after the wrinkled villain appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and many hoped to see more of the Supreme Leader in Star Wars: Episode IX.

However, Snoke's death certainly makes sense – The Last Jedi was more of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey's (Daisy Ridley) story than anything else, and keeping the Supreme Leader alive would have diluted whatever redemption arc Lucasfilm had in mind for the estranged nephew of Luke Skywalker. Let's just wait and see what happens to Kylo in Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently available on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and Digital HD.
