Mark Hamill Regrets Airing Out His Misgivings Against Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have enjoyed both critical and commercial success during its release, however, the film has also become the most divisive entry in the franchise. While there are many who enjoyed the film's bold direction, there were also others who felt outraged over the way the film subverted fan expectations and played with Star Wars lore.

Fans were especially upset with the way the film turned Luke into a bitter and jaded hermit, saying that the Luke Skywalker from the original trilogy wouldn't end up this way. Last year Mark Hamill also expressed concern over the way director Rian Johnson wrote the character and many of those against The Last Jedi have been using the actor's statements to validate their outrage.

However, in a new Q and A for the documentary The Director and the Jedi (via The Digital Spy), the Star Wars legend apologizes for adding fuel to the fire.

"I'm like a lot of you," Hamill explained. "I feel an investment in it, a certain sense of ownership, which is a joke, because I don't own it, now Disney does. But you care! That's what happens with these films."

According to the actor, he shouldn't have been quick to open up about his initial concern over Luke, saying that his opinions should have simply stayed within production.

"I'm sorry I lowered my guard and expressed my misgivings about it. That belongs in the [filmmaking] process. That doesn't belong to the public. I feel bad because I made that statement before I saw the finished film." Hamill said.

According to the Star Wars legend, his opinion of The Last Jedi has changed a lot since he started working on the movie, and Hamill now describes The Force Awakens sequel as "probably the most complex Star Wars film since maybe Empire."
