Fans have a lot of questions about the future of the Star Wars franchise after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The new Star Wars movie isn't just going to close the curtain on Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy, it's also going to culminate the entire Skywalker saga. That's 40 years of Star Wars coming to an end. What's going to come after The Rise of Skywalker?
Speaking in an interview with the New York Times (via ComicBook.com), Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy decided to address fans' concerns about the future of the franchise after the premiere of Episode IX. Sure, Disney CEO Bob Iger might insist that Star Wars slow down its production, but Lucasfilm will keep telling stories from the galaxy far, far away.
"It's not as though we have nothing to dip into, but all it is, really, are road posts, pointing us in a direction," Kennedy explained in the interview with the publication,"You don't spend a lot of time defining what it is that George intimates in this mythology. You tell stories about people, and you take the mythology and apply it to their conflict."
There have been a lot of questions about the direction of the franchise after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm might have had a trilogy by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set for 2022, but that got canned after the duo decided to walk away from the project to focus on their deal with Netflix.
Lucasfilm may be planning to focus on its offerings on Disney+. Star Wars: The Mandalorian has been a major hit with Pedro Pascal playing the titular character who protects the adorable Baby Yoda. Aside from that, the studio also has a couple of other live-action Star Wars series on the way. One is the Rogue One prequel series featuring Diego Luna's Captain Cassian Andor and the other is an Obi-Wan series presenting the return of Ewan McGregor.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
