Last week, Star Wars fans were disappointed to learn that the production of Lucasfilm's Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+ had been delayed for a few months. While Star Wars prequel trilogy Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor says that the delay doesn't necessarily mean that the Star Wars series is in trouble, word on the street says that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy may be in trouble because of the project.
According to Midnight's Edge, sources close to Lucasfilm and Disney say that Kennedy may be up for "early retirement" following the issues with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. These rumors suggest that Lucasfilm is looking for a change in leadership after all of the different issues the franchise has faced in the years that the property has been with Disney.
"The talk around Pinewood Studios is that Kathleen Kennedy is heading out the door for early retirement," the source says.
These sources also claim that Obi-Wan Kenobi's directors were told by Lucasfilm that they would have to deal with someone new in the near future.
"The crew and contractors were officially released, meaning the project is canceled. An official email released all personnel, who will expectedly be working on other projects the next day," the source goes on.
As worrisome as the news of Kennedy's "early retirement" might sound, there have long since been rumors of the Lucasfilm President deciding to step down from her place as the company head. These rumors usually appear when Lucasfilm struggles with its projects. It happened when fans started complaining that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a rehash of A New Hope. Rumors of Kennedy's resignation also began popping up after the backlash against Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Then there was the box office flop made by Solo: A Star Wars Story and the backlash against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Based on all the "Kennedy Retirement" rumors that have gone in and out of the cycle, it seems unlikely for Kennedy to step down from her place in Lucasfilm. Let's just wait and see.
