Longer Movies Like Star Wars: The Last Jedi And Avengers: Endgame Get More Critical Success

Rotten Tomatoes just recently did a study on its more successful films, and according to the review aggregate site's study, movies that last longer than 140 minutes like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Avengers: Endgame.

The site recently took into account 1,431 movies that have had a white theatrical release playing in more than 500 cinemas since 2010. These movies were divided into different categories according to length. There were movies categorized under 100 minutes, movies between 100 and 120 minutes, movies between 120 and 140 minutes, and movies above 140 minutes.

According to the study, 71% of the movies categorized over 140 minutes have been rated Fresh. Only 60% of those rated between 120 and 140 minutes have been rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. For the films over 100-120 minutes, only 41% were rated Fresh. It goes even lower for the films under 100 minutes, with only 34% of those rated Fresh.

These numbers shouldn't really come as a surprise to movie fans. There's been a discussion about movie runtimes the past few years, with major films like Avengers: Endgame and The Last Jedi going well over two and half hours on the big screen.

This year there have been a lot of lengthy films that have been well received by critics. There's been Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Midsommar, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and IT Chapter 2.

Of course, the length isn't necessarily an indicator of the critical success of any kind of film. There are many factors affecting the success of a film like vision, good scriptwriting, and a supportive studio backing the production of the film.
