Lucasfilm has been taking steps towards diversity and inclusivity in the past few years, hiring actors, actresses, and crew members from various minority groups. Of course, the studio still has a long way to go when it comes to certain aspects of representation. That includes the representation of the LGBTQ.
Star Wars seems to be taking steps towards representing members of the queer community though, because the studio just recently hired Russian Doll series creator Leslye Headland, to spearhead her own series for the galaxy far, far away on Disney+.
Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly to talk about her career, Headland was asked what she thinks about her place in the ‘herstory' of the Star Wars franchise.
The Russian Doll writer didn't hesitate at all, openly acknowledging the opportunity that she has as a gay woman creating her very own series for one of the entertainment industry's biggest properties.
"It's shocking to hear that to me," Headland told the entertainment news outlet, "Although I know it's true because there are so few of us that are allowed to sit at the table, so to speak, and many, many more that are still not allowed. It's an honor in the sense that I feel incredibly grateful and lucky. I also would say that... I think Fran would agree with this, that a lot of this business is luck. A lot of it is."
Though little is known about Headland's new series, there's definitely a lot of excitement for the new project. Star Wars is officially moving away from the Skywalker saga, and while it might be hard to let go of a story that everyone's loved for so long, fans are eager to see what new narratives Lucasfilm might explore in the future of the franchise.
