A lot of Marvel fans loved how Taika Waititi used Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song in the promotional material for his Marvel superhero space buddy movie, Thor: Ragnarok, but little did they know that the film's creative team wanted to add a few changes to the iconic track.
However, it seems like the band decided to block them. Speaking in an interview with Screen Rant, Thor: Ragnarok film composer Mark Mothersbaugh talks about how the song ended up in Ragnarok as well as how the team wanted to add a little tweak to the track.
"I love that song. So great. And fits so perfect in the film. They did it in the trailer. How many months ago was that? Four months ago? Five or six months ago? And it was such a hit that they knew they wanted to see if they could talk Jimmy [Paige] and Robert [Plant] into letting them put in the movie and they had to see the movie and they loved it, they really wanted it to be in there too. So that's how we ended up getting it for two uses."
After obtaining the rights to use the Immigrant Song in Ragnarok, Marvel tried to ask the band whether they could change the song a bit by adding in an orchestral accompaniment during the bridge of the song, but the band blocked them.
"If there was only one regret, we threw it out there – what do you think about the idea of letting Mark put his 100 piece orchestra over the second use on the bridge. And they were like ‘no one's allowed to touch our song in any way musically'. They have these rules of what you're allowed to do. It was an idea… maybe on the next film…"
Guess Led Zeppelin doesn't really like the idea of an orchestral bridge for the Immigrant Song, though the piece might have been interesting.
Thor: Ragnarok is currently screening in cinemas.
