James Gunn Talks About What He’s Excited For The Most In GOTG 3

After months of endless controversy, Disney decided to rehire Marvel director James Gunn for Guardians of the Valaxy Vol. 3.

Speaking in a new interview with Deadline, the director decides to open up and talk about the fallout with the Mickey Mouse House, as well as his eventual return. In his discussion with the publication, Gunn talks about what he would have missed the most had Disney decided against rehiring him for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. While the filmmaker loves all of the members of the Guardians, Gunn says that he loves Rocket Raccoon the most.

"When you asked me what was saddest for me when I thought it was gone—and anybody at Marvel can tell you—it's this very strange and attached relationship to Rocket," Gunn explained in his interview with the publication. "Rocket is me, he really is, even if that sounds narcissistic. Groot is like my dog. I love Groot in a completely different way. I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script."

Gunn's lucky that he's been brought back to finish Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Now the director can complete Rocket's character arc – something that's definitely going to be interesting to see after everything the raccoon's been through in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Fans have noticed how Rocket had lost his usual verve in Endgame – we can only wonder whether the Guardian's wit might return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

We'll have to wait a while though. Gunn has to finish directing Suicide Squad 2 for DC before working on Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Avengers: Endgame is currently screening in cinemas.
