Marvel has a pretty great knack at spotting talent, bringing in up-and-coming directors to build the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which in turn helps turn these films into household names. Examples of these directors include Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: Civil War), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther).

Now, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reveals just how Marvel picks its directors for its new projects. The filmmaker just recently went on a question and answer session with fans on his Instagram story (via ComicBook.com) and there a fan asked what Marvel's process was selecting its filmmakers for the MCU.

"Do directors approach Marvel Studios with their ideas and stories or is it vice versa?" the fan asked the director.

"It's vice versa," Gunn revealed.

It seems like Marvel is the one that takes time to check out the Hollywood scene to see potential in up-and-coming directors that the studio can bring in to help build the MCU. Warner Brothers did the same thing when it hired Gunn to work on a project for the DC Extended Universe. The only thing that came out differently was that Warner Brothers allowed the Guardians of the Galaxy director to choose any project from the studio's roster of films for DC. Gunn most wanted to work on The Suicide Squad.

Of course, this doesn't mean that the director's forgotten all about the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Gunn is set to return to the MCU to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once he's completed his work for DC.

The Suicide Squad premieres on August 6, 2021.
