How Star Wars: Episode IX May Not Do As Well As Expected

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is making its way to cinemas this December, and everyone's expecting the film to make it big at the box office when it finally makes its premiere. After all, there's a lot riding on Episode IX. Not only is the film supposed to serve as the final chapter in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, but it's also supposed to culminate in the last forty years of the Skywalker saga.

Of course, while many expect Episode IX to make it big, there's also the possibility that the film won't do as well as everyone anticipates. Forbes writer Scott Mendelson has a new piece detailing his "doom-n-gloom guestimate" of The Rise of Skywalker's box office outcome – the other end of the string in the writer's pessimistic and optimistic box office projections.

According to Mendelson, there are a number of reasons why Episode IX might not do as well as predicted. One of the reasons the writer lists in his post is that the film lacks Carrie Fisher's actual presence and because most of the original trilogy heroes are dead. Han (Harrison Ford) was killed off in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Luke (Mark Hamill) sacrificed his life in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And now that Carrie is gone, Lea has been reduced to a cameo.

Aside from that drawback, Mendelson says that The Rise of Skywalker may be affected by The Last Jedi's mixed reviews, as well as the arrival of Jumanji: The Next Level, a crowd-pleasing sequel that's set to premiere around the same time as Episode IX.
