Here’s How Star Trek Programming Head Alex Kurtzman Convinced Patrick Stewart To Return As Picard

Trekkies were certainly in for a surprise when CBS All Access announced that it was giving Star Trek legend Patrick Stewart his very own series, allowing him to reprise his role as the iconic Jean-Luc Picard. Of course, Stewart didn't say yes to the idea right away, but after giving the proposal some thought, the X-Men star eventually said yes.

The series' executive producer, Alex Kurtzman, just recently spoke in an interview with Variety about the upcoming Star Trek series centered on the Captain of the USS Enterprise-D, Jean-Luc Picard. According to Kurtzman, and his team first believed that they had failed to convince Stewart to return to the role after speaking with him about their proposal.

"We proposed it to him, he sat there and listening very thoughtfully as he does, said, ‘Thank you, let me think about it,'" the head of all of CBS' new Star Trek programming explained during his discussion with the entertainment news outlet, "We thought we failed. But on Monday his agent called and said, ‘He's interested and he'd like to know more and can you write down what you had.'"

After learning that Stewart was looking forward to knowing more about their plans for a Picard series, Kurtzman and his team of writers soon turned their four-page pitch into a 34 page-long treatment which they sent to the Star Trek legend.

Right now there's very little information about the upcoming Picard series, but according to Kurtzman, the show will take place after the 2009 Star Trek movie, taking on the fall of the Romulan Empire after Spock failed to stop a supernova destroying the planet. Set twenty years after Star Trek: Nemesis, it will also follow an older Picard who is in a new phase of life.

The new Jean-Luc Picard series is set to debut sometime late 2019 on CBS All Access.
