George R.R. Martin Reveals The Upcoming Game Of Thrones Spinoff’s Working Title

Game of Thrones fans finally have the working title for the fantasy epic's prequel series greenlit to pilot by HBO.

The premier cable network has been developing at least five different prequel series to replace Game of Thrones once it ends with its eighth and final season next year, but so far, HBO's only greenlit the show created by GOT writer, Jane Goldman. It's been a while since we've gotten news about Goldman's prequel series, but now it looks like we've gotten the show's working title thanks to the help of A Song of Ice and Fire author himself, George R.R. Martin.

Martin just recently attended this week's Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, and during the event, the fantasy and science fiction author got to talk about Goldman's new Game of Thrones spinoff with Winter Is Coming (via BGR).

"I'm not allowed to say too much about them or HBO will pull out all my fingernails, but one of the shows — working title The Long Night — has been greenlit to pilot," Martin told the publication. "Jane Goldman is the showrunner…They're working on that one right now. I don't know when they'll actually start shooting, but that's going forward. And meanwhile, we have four others in various stages of development."

Though HBO has yet to confirm whether or not the new spinoff is really working under the name The Long Night, Game of Thrones fans know all too well that the title serves as a reference to the longest winter in Westeros.

It's a certainly interesting point to choose from in Westeros' timeline, one that will definitely help add to fans understanding of the history of the seven kingdoms and what came to pass when the first long winter came knocking on the land.

Game of Thrones is set to return with its eighth season on HBO sometime in 2019.
