George Lucas Talks About The Original Plan He Had For The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

George Lucas also had plans of his own for a Star Wars sequel trilogy when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney way back in 2012.

Though Disney's version of the sequel trilogy tried to follow concepts and concept art that Lucas left behind like the dessert Force-sensitive orphan Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the old, wizened and broken-down version of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Lucas also had other ideas for the sequel trilogy.

Lucas offered hints at what he had hoped to explore in his own version of the sequel trilogy in the book James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction. The book, which accompanied the AMC TV special, outlined Lucas' original plans, revealing that the Star Wars creator was hoping to create a series of movies that would tie up more with The Phantom Menace than with the original trilogy.

According to Lucas, the next three films that he was originally planning to make would explore the "microbiotic world." The Star Wars creator wanted to delve into a world "of creatures that operate differently than we do. I call them the Whills. And the Whills are the ones who actually control the universe. They feed off the Force."

Though the Whills sound interesting, this idea of creatures controlling the universe doesn't really fit well with the original trilogy. The whole concept of Force sensitivity having something to do with midichlorians in the prequel trilogy wasn't a very popular idea among fans, many believing that it tainted the power of the concept of the Force.

Still, the Whills have been mentioned in a few Star Wars films like in Rogue One where Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) described himself as a former Guardian of the Whills, a protector of the Kyber Temple.

Though Lucas wasn't able to plan the entire story arc surrounding the Whills for his version of the sequel trilogy, the Star Wars creator originally wanted Episode VII to be a story where fans see an older Luke teaching a character named Kira in a place much like Ahch-To.

What do you think of the Whills as Force-feeding creatures that control the universe? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Lucasfilm's most recent film, Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently screening in cinemas.
