Footage From George Lucas’ Canceled Star Wars Live-Action Series Is Online

Before Star Wars: The Mandalorian hit Disney+ as the first-ever live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars creator George Lucas announced that he was developing a show of his own called Star Wars: Underworld way back in 2005.

Though the television project never really kicked off, test footage from the project seems to have made its way online. YouTube Channel Holonet just recently posted test footage from Star Wars: Underworld, and in it, we get to see what George Lucas would have wanted for his live-action Star Wars series.

Based on the footage released, the production value for Underworld seems pretty good with its CGI reminiscent of what Lucas used for his prequel trilogy. The project also seems like a mix between Star Wars and Blade Runner with its dark gritty buildings teeming with all sorts of shady people passing through the underbelly of the lower levels of Coruscant.

We can't be sure whether the footage is legitimate, but if the video really does come from Underworld, then we would understand how the project would require a larger production budget than what studios usually spent on in the past.

Speaking in an interview in 2012, Lucas revealed that Underworld would have to be shelved despite 50 hours of footage. Apparently, Lucas' team needed technology that would make it economically feasible to shoot the rest of the series. The Star Wars creator just didn't have enough budget to complete the project.

Such a shame that the series didn't really push through. According to the description of the video by Holonet, the series was supposed to be set right after the events of Order 66. Lucasfilm was supposed to release a videogame called 1313 as a tie-in to the series. Right now we have Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but that has nothing to do with the canceled series.

Lucasfilm's latest film release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is currently screening in cinemas.
