Doctor Strange’s Benedict Cumberbatch Addresses Criticism Against Marvel Movies

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been enduring a barrage of criticism the past few weeks. There's been quite a clamor ever since critically-acclaimed Martin Scorsese decided to reveal that he didn't really think of Marvel movies as "cinema," and this week The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola decided to join in the debate, saying that he thought Marvel moves were "despicable" as well.

Now, it looks like Doctor Strange and Avengers: Endgame star Benedict Cumberbatch has decided to share his thoughts regarding the Marvel movie witch hunt.

Speaking in an interview on The Jenny McCarthy Show to help promote his upcoming historical drama, The Current War, the Marvel actor decides to address the criticism that's been thrown at the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"I know there's been a lot of debate lately with really very fine filmmakers coming to the fore saying that these film franchises are taking over everything, but lucky us actors who get to do both kinds of variety at either polarity of budgeting," the actor explained.

Cumberbatch seems to agree with Scorsese's pitch about making sure that films with smaller budgets still find support in cinemas, explaining that "we don't want King to rule it all and have a kind of monopoly."

However, the actor also believes that comic book movies have artistic merit of its own.

"It is a form of artistry. However it's denigrated by some, I think it still requires a hell of a lot of craft at a very high level and the popularity speaks to that as well as whatever else it's about," the Marvel star defends.

Of course, it isn't easy making a film, and blockbuster movies can be very difficult to manage. It's amazing how Marvel has been able to come up with a formula for success.
