The Star Wars franchise is heading towards a new direction after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres this week, and during a recent interview, Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the studio was considering exploring other structures outside the usual sets of three films that come with the Skywalker saga.
Lucasfilm doesn't want to be limited to the trilogy format, and so, the studio plans on experimenting with other formats after the sequel trilogy come to an end with the release of Episode IX. While the studio seems certain about its decision to explore other formats, Disney CEO Bob Iger isn't so sure about throwing away the idea of having new trilogies for the galaxy far, far away.
Speaking in a new interview with Variety, Iger was asked what he thought of this new development in the Star Wars franchise. The Disney CEO, however, seems unsure about the decision.
"Oh, I don't know about that," Iger told the publication, "She and I have said, ‘Well, maybe trilogies are too hard, so maybe we'll make one film and then a sequel,' but we don't know."
Disney may seem apprehensive to stray far from the formula that's made Star Wars work, and the studio may want to wait and see whether a two-movie format would suit the franchise better than a trilogy.
The format of the franchise probably depends on the strength and the needs of the new stories that Lucasfilm hopes to portray. There could be stories that need only two films to complete their narrative. Perhaps there are stories that need three.
Let's wait and see what Lucasfilm does with Star Wars after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres on December 20, 2019.
