Disney Trying To Turn Darth Vader Into Likable Anti-Hero Instead Of The Villain He Is

Darth Vader might have always been one of the biggest villains in cinematic history, but it Lucasfilm is trying to turn the heavy-breathing baddie into an anti-hero instead.

StarWars.com just recently posted a press release for Disney's upcoming Star Wars comic series, Star Wars: Vader – Dark Vision and now instead of describing Vader as a villain, the site calls the character as "the mysterious anti-hero" of the comic book run.

Sure, the series might want to present Vader in a perspective that fans might not be familiar with outside of Lucasfilm's various Star Wars films and television series, but can Vader really "be someone's greatest fear and even...someone's greatest hope" in the franchise?

It seems pretty clear that Disney wants fans to think of Darth Vader as an antihero instead of the villain that he is and not only is that bizarre, but it's also pretty troubling.

While it's pretty lovely seeing the studio taking on a more active approach at showcasing the different shades of moral grey, Vader is still a villain. He might have had a tragic backstory in the Star Wars prequels, turning into Vader after being seduced to the Dark Side by a manipulative Dark Force User, but Vader's always been considered a villain by pop culture. Even after the release of George Lucas' prequel films, Vader was still considered a villain by Lucasfilm.

Why is Star Wars suddenly calling the baddie an anti-hero? What's changed? Is Disney trying to sand him into being the proper Mickey Mouse House villain who's a likable bad guy?

It might seem that way.

What do you think of Vader as an anti-hero? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
