Disney Confirms that Han Solo and Greedo Shoot-Out Scene was Edited by George Lucas

It looks like Star Wars has changed its mind about whether Han Solo or Greedo shot first.

The debate about whether Star Wars' swashbuckling smuggler shot Greedo first in the Cantina sequence in Star Wars: A New Hope has been going for as long as the franchise has existed, and the answer has constantly been changing.

Now, Disney confirms that George Lucas actually made an edit to the original Star Wars film, adding an entirely new scene of the Rodian bounty hunter speaking while meeting with Han Solo in the Mos Eisley cantina in Tattoine.

It's a famous scene. Han Solo and Greedo have a tense conversation about the money the former owes. A New Hope was originally filmed and edited to show Solo shooting Greedo before he can get shot by the scoundrel.

However, George Lucas' special edition release of the movie edited the scene, making it seem like Greedo shot first. It became one of the most controversial moments in Star Wars history.

Now, speaking in an interview with The Verge, a Disney representative confirms this edit, saying that the change was "made by George prior to the Disney Acquisition."

It seems like Lucas changed his mind about having Han shoot first. Perhaps the Star Wars creator wanted to lighten the smuggler's alignment, allowing the character to become a hero in the franchise. Having Han shoot first would show just how ruthless the character could be, making it seem unlikely for the character to join the Rebellion. Lucas properly had to adjust that, so he changed the scene in A New Hope.

Which would you have preferred? Han shooting first, or Greedo? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
