DC Film Producer Believes James Gunn Will Bring Together Marvel And DC Fans

Marvel fans were pretty surprised when Marvel Studios announced that it had rehired James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The filmmaker was taken out of Marvel after an alt-right extremist dredged up some of Gunn's inappropriate and insensitive tweets made 14 years in the past, creating a smear campaign that brought the director down with it. Though fans rallied behind Gunn, Disney refused to listen, letting the issue die out for months. Not only that, but Warner Brothers also managed to nab the director for its Suicide Squad sequel.

Now, seeing Gunn as the first director to work for both Marvel Studios and for WB, DC Films producer Peter Safran believes that the filmmaker will be able to unify both Marvel and DC's fandoms.

Speaking in an interview with JoBlo, Safran talks about the power that Gunn has to bring peace to DC and Marvel's rivalling fanbases.

"And you know what I love about James directing for both Marvel and DC is he has always espoused the view that that which unites comic book and superhero lovers is much greater than that which divides us," Safran tells the publication, "Because, there's always been this Marvel/DC rivalry, which he has said, and I agree, is absurd. There's room for everybody and certainly that which unites us all is far greater than that which divides us, so hopefully they'll see that you can be both a Marvel and a DC fan and the world won't spin off its axis."

While some fans worry that Suicide Squad 2's production might affect Gunn's work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Marvel has promised that they'd wait for the director to finish the Suicide Squad sequel. How generous.

DC's next film, Shazam!, premieres April 5, 2019.
