Captain Marvel’s Carol Danvers Will Wholeheartedly Believe She Is Kree

Marvel might have only released two different trailers and a couple of TV spots for Captain Marvel but the promotional campaign for the studio's first female-led standalone movie has made it pretty clear that Brie Larson's Carol Danvers is going to forget who she'd been on earth in the film.

Now, Captain Marvel executive producer Jonathan Schwartz gives us more details about Carol's memory loss, telling ComicBook.com that at the beginning of the film fans will get to see Marvel's strongest Avenger wholeheartedly believing that she is a Kree.

"I mean, a lot of the movie is about Carol not remembering her human past," Schwartz explained during the publication's set visit. "When we meet her at the beginning of the movie, she believes that she is a Kree, and kind of has been inducted into their army. She's proud as a person, she loves being a Kree. And then over the course of her adventure, realized there's more to her story than that. So the movie kind of becomes her unraveling the root of her own origin, the root of her own mystery."

For those who aren't familiar with the character's origin in more recent comics, Carol Danvers discovers that she really does have some sort of connection to the Kree. Danvers mother was a full Kree warrior who was sent to Earth on a scouting mission. She falls in love with a married man and brings Carol into the world. Her father, however, keeps her mother a secret, raising Carol as one of his own with his wife and legitimate son. It isn't until the death of his father that Carol learns about her true heritage.

It's an interesting take on Captain Marvel's story. However, while this origin comes from the latest Captain Marvel comic book series, Life of Captain Marvel, it seems like the MCU's upcoming standalone movie might diverge from this path. In the trailers for the film, we get hints that Carol will receive her powers after being caught in the fight between the Kree and the Skrulls. We can't wait to see what happens when Carol learns about her true origins in the movie.

Captain Marvel hits cinemas March 8, 2019.
