Captain Marvel Originally Had A Very Different Ending

There was a lot riding on Captain Marvel. Not only was the film Brie Larson's debut as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's strongest Avenger, but Captain Marvel was also Marvel's very first female standalone comic book movie.

Though some were concerned because Captain Marvel had so many boxes to check as it entered the MCU (introduce a new character, shift around the timeline, explain Carol Danvers' absence in the MCU), the film tied everything as well as it could. Despite that, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck had very different plans for the film's ending.

Speaking in an interview with Debbie Berman, the film editor who had previously worked on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther, Entertainment Tonight learned that there were very different plans for Captain Marvels ending.

"I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film. It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring," Berman said in her discussion with Entertainment Tonight. "Like, where exactly was she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her leaving and disappearing for so many years."

According to Berman, this was the main reason why they had to have Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and his family flying off together with Carol.

"So we added Talos and his family in their spaceship waiting for her, and they all fly off together. It gave her more of a sense of purpose and made it easier to believe that she left her newfound life on Earth because she was with a friend we knew she cared about, and for a more specific mission. It gave more resonance and closure to her final moment in the film," Berman added.

At the end of Captain Marvel, Carol decides to help the Skrulls find a new home. Sure, the Skrulls might have started out as villains in the film, but in the latter half of Captain Marvel viewers soon learn that the aliens are nothing but refugees looking for another home. The Kree had been lying to Carol, killing off the Skrulls because of their radical beliefs.
