Captain Marvel Meant To Introduce The Idea Of The Secret Invasion To The MCU

It looks like Captain Marvel won't only be the film that introduces Marvel's strongest Avenger, the studio's first female-led comic book movie will also plant seeds for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next chapter: the Secret Invasion.

ComicBook.com just recently wrote about their visit to the set of Captain Marvel last year and the publication managed to speak with the film's executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. During the interview, Schwartz hinted at Captain Marvel planting the seeds for Marvel's Secret Invasion.

"That's cool, right? Yes, we talked about Secret Invasion. I wouldn't go into this movie saying 'Which one of these superheroes is a Skrull?" Because Carol's is more or less the first superhero to show up on Earth. But are we planting seeds for future movies? Always," the producer said during the discussion.

For those who aren't familiar with the story, the Secret Invasion is a comic book arc where the Skrulls, a shape-shifting race of aliens, try to invade earth after the destruction of their homeworld. In the arc, the Skrulls secretly replace the Earth's heroes with their own in preparation to take over the planet.

While Schwartz says the appearance of the Skrulls doesn't necessarily mean that Marvel would retcon an Avenger and reveal them as a Skrull, the arrival of Captain Marvel also opens the MCU up to the possibility of a Secret Invasion storyline – one that could come along with the Marvel Cosmic Universe.

We can't wait to see it all push through.

Captain Marvel debuts March 8, 2019.
