Captain Marvel Directors Actually Had Other Options Explaining How Nick Fury Loses His Eye

Captain Marvel might have been a big hit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, fans were very disappointed how the film answered one particular mystery concerning Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) – how the S.H.I.E.L.D. director lost his eye.

In previous entries in the MCU, Fury explains that he lost his eye after giving trusting someone that he shouldn't have. Captain Marvel unveils the truth behind this story, revealing that the S.H.I.E.L.D. director actually lost his eye because of Captain Marvel's (Brie Larson) cat/ flerken, Goose. Fans were disappointed by the revelation. Losing an eye to a cat seemed too flippant, something that couldn't be taken seriously.

Now, speaking in an interview with Comic BookMovieCaptain Marvel co-director Ryan Fleck explains that many other sources of injuries were considered before he and Anna Boden decided to settle on Goose scratching Fury's eye out.

"There were definitely a lot of discussions and that was not the first idea on the table," Fleck shared with the publication, "You're probably going to ask me what some of the other ideas were and I don't know if I can tell you that, not because I'm hiding anything, but because there were just so many absurd ideas we had. There was a strong contender for a while that a fight with the Skrulls seemed like the most obvious choice but then the more we thought about it, it just became too obvious."

It's such a shame that Fleck and Boden didn't go with the Skrulls. That would have made more sense that having Fury losing his eye to Goose.
