Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman On How He’s Become ‘More Idealistic’ About Diversity In Films

Times are certainly changing and so is Hollywood's socio-political landscape. Not only is technology in films advancing, but so is the mindset of those creating and viewing films. More and more people are looking for diversity in the movies that they get to see in Hollywood, and with the success of Black Panther, Marvel's T'Challa star Chadwick Boseman feels so much more idealistic.

Speaking in a video interview on Close-Up With the Hollywood Reporter, Boseman talks about the groundbreaking success of his first standalone film as the King of Wakanda, saying that the film's turn out made him feel more "idealistic" about other comic book films centered around people of color in Hollywood.

"I would say that even the way the studio responded, the fact that they put so much into it, I never thought I would see that," Boseman said during the publication's actor's roundtable segment.

At first, the actor just couldn't understand why Marvel would invest in a comic book movie with so many African American actors.

"I never thought I would see a studio say, ‘Yeah, we're gonna put the money behind this movie with mostly a black cast.' Sometimes we have, as African Americans, we have the ‘black version,' and it's never as good. They never put as much into it," Boseman explained.

However, after seeing the blood sweat and tears that Ryan Coogler and his team put into Black Panther, Boseman couldn't help but feel more idealistic about the world.

"So it made me more idealistic about the world and about how things can go and that that can happen, in other places, other production companies, other studios, other projects," the actor went on. "That's aspirational not just for myself, but for other people, and not just in film, but in other arenas."

Black Panther certainly was an inspirational film. Not only was it the first standalone movie for a black hero in the MCU, but it also became the first movie featuring an all-black cast. Making huge strides at the box office, the film's success proved just how much we needed diversity in representation in our films.

Boseman is set to return as Black Panther in Avengers: Endgame on April 26, 2019.
