Avengers: Endgame Writers Explored Possibilities Where Iron Man Lived

Iron Man's (Robert Downey Jr.) fate in Avengers: Endgame might have broken the hearts of many, but fans understood why the film's writers chose Tony Stark as the one who makes the ultimate sacrifice, throwing away his life to use the Infinity Gauntlet to put an end to Thanos' (Josh Brolin) machinations.

However, while Iron Man's sacrifice in Endgame seemed pretty fitting considering that it was Tony who started the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first place, the film's writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely actually explored several story threads that would have the Avenger alive.

McFeely and Markus just recently spoke in an interview with Canada.com, and during the discussion, the writers revealed that they were actually asked to explore all the possible options with all of Endgame's heroes to see whether allowing them to live or to die would suit the narrative of the film.

While most fans would have probably wanted to see Tony live to see his daughter grow up, Iron Man sacrificing his life seemed like the best choice for the film.

We weren't there to just kill characters off," said Markus. "We were told, ‘If the story demands it, you can take people off the board. But if there's a good story to be told and no one dies, go ahead and tell that one too.'"

"In Endgame, we were trying to finish arcs and for Iron Man/Tony Stark to give up his life and sacrifice himself for the good of the universe seemed like a really good narrative closure for the billionaire playboy who had been learning over the course of several films (to be a better person)," he added.

It was the best decision. What better way to culminate the past ten years of the MCU but to see a hero who had once been so focused on himself, sacrifice his life to save the rest of the Universe?

Do you think that McFeely and Markus did the right thing, killing of Iron Man? Did it serve the story well? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Avengers: Endgame is currently available on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
