Avengers: Endgame Writer Responds To The Politically Correct 'Fan Service' Scene In The Movie

Avengers: Endgame did its very best culminating the last ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only was the sequel to Avengers: Infinity War littered with callbacks to previous Marvel entries like Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy, but it also had great moments celebrating the legacy of the franchise.

However, one of these moments seems to have drawn a vocal group of detractors. In the climactic battle sequence during the third act of Endgame, viewers get to see Marvel heavy hitters gathering around Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in order to protect the two who were keeping the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' forces. These heavy hitters were all women, a clear salute to the female heroes of the MCU.

While the scene was well-received by many, some have aired the outrage against the "political correctness" of the sequence.

However, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely aren't the least bit concerned, saying that the scene was one of their favorites in the movie.

"These movies would be nonexistent without the fans. So, you know, a movie that is made to frustrate fans seems a little suicidal," Markus said in an interview with Variety. "People say 'fan service' like you are pandering to some niche. I mean, we've all seen the numbers that these movies make. The fans are the majority at this point. Fan service is simply honoring the stories that have come before. It's not like we're pulling out a tiny Easter egg that only three people are going to get. It's just tying up the threads; it's picking up the nuances that have been dropped earlier. I don't see it as any kind of niche writing."

Right now, Marvel is making a clear effort at championing representation and diversity in its films by producing entries like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. The studio promises to do even more as it prepares for Phase 4 of the MCU.

Avengers: Endgame is currently screening in cinemas.
