Avengers: Endgame Directors On The Trouble Of Having Captain Marvel In The Film

Marvel fans are pretty excited to see Brie Larson's Carol Danvers make her way to the big screen next month in Marvel Studio's first female-led standalone comic book movie, Captain Marvel. Not only is Carol Danvers an exciting new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she's also one of the most powerful characters in the franchise and once she makes her appearance in Avengers: Endgame, fans are excited to see her tip the scales in the fight against Thanos.

However, while many fans hope to see Captain Marvel beat Thanos without a single drop of sweat rolling off her cheek, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have to properly balance Endgame to keep the stakes as high as it already is. Speaking in an interview with Cinema Blend, the directorial duo open up about this challenge, admitting just how difficult it is to introduce such a powerful character to the film.

"It's always a concern of ours about overpowering characters, because the reason that people relate to these characters is their humanity, and that they're flawed," Joe told the entertainment news outlet."And the reason we love working so much with Captain America was that he was limited, and his heart was his superpower, you know? So we're all acutely aware of the dangers of having an overly powerful character. [But] we like sensitive storytelling, so… we found a thoughtful way through it."

According to the filmmakers, the most difficult part of having excessively powerful characters in movies is working on finding ways to expose these heroes vulnerabilities and complexities, How do you keep the stakes high and yet at the same time make Captain Marvel more human?

Of course, the Russo brothers don't shy away from a challenge. Instead of seeing Captain Marvel as an issue for Endgame, Joe and Anthony are using the character as a storytelling opportunity for future films n the MCU.

Avengers: Endgame premieres April 26, 2019.
