Anthony Daniels Addresses C-3PO’s Red Eyes and Journey in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars fans were pretty surprised when they got to see C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) with red eyes in one of the trailers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Would the droid find himself possessed by some sort of Sith influence? Would he be used by Emperor Palpatine? Would he malfunction at some point in the film?

Concern over the communications protocol droid became more pressing when Lucasfilm released the final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker. C-3PO seemed to tease the end of the road when he told Poe (Oscar Isaac) that he was looking at his friends one last time.

Now, Star Wars legend Anthony Daniels addresses C-3PO's red eyes in Episode IX. Speaking in an interview with Games Radar's sister publication, Total Film, Daniels opens up about the shock he had when he put on the newly tinted helmet for the droid.

"It was a shock when I put the [helmet] on, because it wasn't like C-3PO," the actor told the entertainment news outlet, "That's what I found quite scary, how much the colour change made him look totally different. It was totally uncanny, and slightly uncomfortable."

Daniels also addressed C-3PO's role in The Rise of Skywalker. According to the actor, he's been a bit disappointed over the role that his character's played in the sequel trilogy. To Daniels, C-3PO has been nothing but decoration in Lucasfilm's new set of movies.

Now, the actor is pleased to say that C-3PO is going to play a larger part in Episode IX.

"For C-3PO as a character that I love – if he were to go to the movies and watch himself in this last movie, I think he'd be very pleased. I'll leave it at that," Daniels says.

We can't wait to see what kind of role that C-3PO is going to play in The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
