Thor Ragnarok: Taika Waititi Explains Why He Changed The Location Of Hela Destroying Mjolnir

When we first saw Hela destroying Mjonir in the Thor: Ragnarok teaser, the background was that of a New York alleyway. New clips have come out of the same scene, but this time around, it has Hela destroying Mjolnir in a green field, so why was it changed?

According to director Taika Waititi, it was because of the reshoots, and he wanted to make the scene with Mjolnir's destruction a bit more emotional. When Digital Spy asked him about the change, he initially joked:

"Alleyways aren't cool. Fields are cool. Ask anyone"

He then got a bit more serious and said:

"We originally shot some of that stuff on the set of our stuff in New York. What we wanted to do was have them go down to Earth and they see Doctor Strange and stuff but it felt too convenient that he was suddenly just down the road in an alley and also everything, up to then, everything was so fast-paced and all over the place."

We wanted to go somewhere peaceful and actually chill out with those characters and be with Odin while he imparts this wisdom and stuff and not have to hear stupid yellow cabs honking out the back."

Set photos had revealed that Anthony Hopkins Odin has been roaming around New York as a homeless person, but now with the change in setting, I wonder how exactly the characters are going to find themselves in that open field. I'm thinking Doctor Strange's teleporting doors will have something to do with it.

Trailer breakdowns have also pointed out that the alleyway fight scene was supposed to include a homage to Waititi's other movie, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, with "Skux Life" graffiti appearing behind Thor. With the change, however, I think the reference is gone for now.

Thor: Ragnarok comes out Nov. 3.
