Thor: Ragnarok Director Taika Waititi Explains That Star Wars-Slamming Tweet

Back in September, Taika Waititi sent out a burning Star Wars tweet that seemingly fired shots at the Han Solo directorial shake-ups.

Fans started asking the filmmaker whether he'd like to try out directing a Star Wars movie after Thor: Ragnarok received positive early reviews, and while everyone wanted Waititi to give out a resounding yes, the Marvel director instead jokingly said that he wasn't interested working for the Star Wars franchise because he'd very much like "to complete (his) films."

Sitting down to speak with Uproxx, Waititi has decided to come out with an explanation, saying that he really doesn't understand why the tweet went viral.

"Why is it infamous? I was just saying I'd be scared I'd be fired."

According to the Marvel director, while he wouldn't really turn down the once-in-a-lifetime chance to direct a Star Wars Movie, he'd just be much more cautious after Lucasfilm decided to fire Solo: A Star Wars Story directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller as well as Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow.

"Look, I'm not an idiot. Who would actually say no to Star Wars? Of course, I didn't send that idea very seriously, it's more that in light of all the things that were happening over the last couple of months, it would make me a little nervous."

Still, Waitit understands the reasons why Lucasfilm's expects its directors to follow a certain form.

"But I see both sides of it. It's such a strong, established property – you recognize it and you recognize the tone with every one of those films. So I can kind of get why, on the studio side, why they feel they have a duty to keep it a certain way. And I've been lucky with Thor and Marvel that they can go off in any direction they want really."

Waititi is a filmmaker who loves his creative freedom, so it's understandable that he'd be hesitant joining the Star Wars franchise after the firings during the past few months. Still, even though Waititi thinks he'd have a hard time coming on board the galaxy far, far away, there's no doubt that he'll continue receiving project offers from Hollywood.

Thor: Ragnarok hits cinemas Friday, November 3, 2017.
