There Have Been Discussions To Crossover Pacific Rim And Godzilla/Kong

You could say that Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim was responsible for bringing back kaiju to mainstream blockbusters, and now Legendary is coming up with its own Monsterverse which includes the likes of King Kong, Godzilla, and King Ghidora. As it turns out, there have been discussions on crossing over both Pacific Rim and Godzilla/Kong franchises, and it's entirely possible that we could get a movie where Jaegers fight one of these classic movie monsters.

Speaking to Collider, Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight talks:

"I won't say there's an Easter Egg but there's been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary's Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility. It's by far not a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen."

It's worth noting that Legendary and Warner Bros. were responsible for distributing the first Pacific Rim, Godzilla (2014), and Kong: Skull Island; but PR: Uprising will be distributed by Universal this time around. Seeing that these rights issues usually lead to conflicts, hopefully Legendary can make some sort of deal with Universal like they did with Warner Bros.

When it comes to the Monsterverse, I think the most difficult aspect of keeping these movies interconnected is the fact that humans can't be the main characters. Everyone is in it to see giant monsters battling each other, and like the first Godzilla, it seems that humans only prove to be a distraction. Then again, it's hard to make movies relatable without humans—and that's where Pacific Rim steps in.

As DeKnight said, this crossover is only theoretical, and both franchises still have their own sequels to pump out. If we were to get a crossover between Pacific Rim and the Monsterverse, I'm guessing the movie will come out after 2020.

Pacific Rim Uprising is set for a release on March 23, 2018, and Godzilla: King of Monsters comes out March 22, 2019.
