The Walking Dead Showrunner Weighs in On Fan Theory

In the latest episode of The Walking Dead, Daryl had been quite a sad spectacle for fans. Not only was he dressed in the most ridiculous onesie, he was also unable to stutter out a single word.

But for some fans, that doesn't mean that the resident bad boy wasn't doing something behind the scenes. A recent rumor had erupted about Daryl communicating in Morse code with Rick. This was mostly because he seemed to be doing a lot of blinking during the episode.

To settle the rumor once and for all, Comicbook.com asked showrunner Scott Gimple on what exactly was going on between the two. According to Gimple, it appears that nothing was going on.

"I heard about this on set yesterday. I would like to live in a world where Daryl Dixon residuously learns Morse code and knows that Rick has an intimate knowledge of Morse code as well, and that they have practiced this with blinks. I would love that."

He added that it was a pretty sunny day during the shoot, which could explain why Daryl was blinking a lot. It won't be surprising if he was sweating like a pig either, considering the sad state of his wardrobe.

Still, Gimple did express joy that the fans had been considering something as intricate as this theory happening behind the scenes. But as far as an actual communication correspondence between the two, the idea appears pretty farfetched.

"The fans of this show are the greatest fans that watch a television program. The stories that they tell and the things that the glean out of it are actually really thrilling. It just excites me that they have enough faith that we have put in some labyrinth theme kind of stuff."

I will say this: if Gimple and company did enjoy fans' efforts, I sure wish they would exert much more for the next episode. The fourth episode was too much of a formulaic filler show, and it was painful to see Negan transform from badass to bratty. It didn't help that the episode was longer than most—imagine all the action hat could've happened.

The Walking Dead will be back on Sunday, 9:00 p.m. on AMC, with Maggie and Sasha at the Hilltop Colony.
