The Walking Dead Season 7 Will See a Rocky Road & a Glimmer of Hope

When we last left the gang in the season premiere episode, it was a hard night and day. Two people killed, one of them almost lost an arm, one taken as prisoner of war, and one leader broken up by responsibilities and decisions.

It's not a pretty picture, and it seems that this is where an entire road will begin for the new season of The Walking Dead. While the showrunners have touched on it time and again, Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln gives his take on where fans can expect the show moving forward, especially now that we've seen the worst and a possibly a hopeful community in the horizon.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lincoln shares that his character is now at that odd crossroads following his transformation.

"My huge concern… was to tell the story of a defiant man being turned into an obedient man due to grief and trauma. But I will say that there is a kernel of light in the darkest moment of the show, in my opinion."

When asked what it was—and what we've speculated before—was potentially how the hope that was in that parting scene with the main cast literally picking up the pieces.

"The kernel of hope that is always in the DNA of our show is the moment he's trying to protect Maggie. It's the tiniest moment of anything resembling hope or community or love in this very sort of loveless and bleak new world that they just tumbled across."

Hope—that's the one thing that may keep them from being broken up completely. But of course, that doesn't mean that the previous head of the Ricktatorship will come up standing tall and proud once again.

Lincoln admits that apart from Daryl, Rick will be sharing the blame equally for Glenn's death. And this is because of Rick's tendency to take his responsibilities seriously. At the same time, this is actually Rick's strength and weakness, but this very trait will also be very malleable, considering everything that has been happening.

Let's just hope that when the time comes for Rick to meet with Ezekiel, the seemingly sneaky game plan that the latter has can be put to good use with Rick co-leading it.

The Walking Dead will air Sundays on AMC.
