The Story Behind Joker’s Tattoos In Suicide Squad

Among all the characters in Suicide Squad, Jared Leto's Joker is probably the one villain who we have heard about the most. We know fully well how Leto went all on method in order to imbibe the sinister character completely, and we know how this approach to acting influenced Common's performance in the movie. We know a bit about his relationship with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. We also know how the Oscar-winning actor created his maniacal laugh for the the Clown Prince of Crime on the big screen.

Apparently, we can't know too much of the character. Now, we're knowing more about the Joker's tattoos from director David Ayer, who recently made the revelation in an interview with Yahoo. It turns out that there's more to the character's tattoos than just props. He said:

If a guy like him really existed today, where would he come from? How would he do business? Who would he know? What would he look like? In my mind, I took a lot of inspiration from drug lords on Instagram. It's a great way to understand the lifestyle of a villain.

Obviously, the look of the Joker in Suicide Squad is completely different than the more traditional ensembles we're used to seeing him in previous films. Leto's look resembles a modern crime leader, and it seems that the tattoos are his way of expressing himself.

In the interview, Ayer added that each tattoo has a backstory, and the Joker didn't get them simply on a whim. He said:

The tattoos tell a very specific story. And eventually people will decipher them and understand what's going on, but obviously they're contentious, any time you do something new it's contentious. There's very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there's an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It's putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.

Because there's a lot of characters in Suicide Squad, it remains to be seen whether Joker's past will be fleshed out. Well, if ever his stories doesn't materialize in the movie, it could be one way for Warner Bros. to find a reason to create a solo film of the classic villain. You never know.

The Joker and the rest of the squad's stories will most likely be revealed when Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
