The Praetorian Guards Endured Living In Constant Physical Pain Protecting Supreme Leader Snoke

It looks like fans who'd like to dress up as Supreme Leader Snoke's Praetorian Guards might actually want to forego a few design schematics.

Protecting the Supreme Leader not only poses a risk for these soldiers, it also requires a significant amount of pain. Star Wars: The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary has a lot of fun factoids about the different characters in the movie, and the book describes the inner workings of the Praetorian Guards' suit.

The Armored Guardians might look cool on the big screen, but the layered armor of Snoke's entourage also puts the guards in constant pain. Described as a "high-tech onion-skin of laminate," the Praetorian Guard's armor is "impregnated with conductive wire paths that, once powered, create an intense local magnetic field."

Once activated, the powered plates then gain the ability to deflect blaster fire and lightsabers (though a directed thrust can still pierce through the shell of the armor).

Not only are the magnetic coils costly and heavy, but exposure to the magnetic field created by the plates actually brings physical pain to the soldiers.

In the end, the Elite Praetorian Guard decides to endure everything in order to protect the Supreme Leader in "unswerving loyalty and duty." Because ultimately, "such are the sacrifices" of protecting Snoke. Guess these guys were die-hard fans of the wrinkle-skinned Supreme Leader.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
