The Meg Has Just Surpassed Solo: A Star Wars Story At The Global Box Office

Star Wars fans might be a bit disappointed, but a little less than a month after its release, it looks like The Meg has already outperformed Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars standalone movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story.

According to Cinema Blend, Jon Turteltaub's science fiction thriller shark movie The Meg has just earned more than $412. 79 million at the worldwide box office, sailing past the total earnings of Solo which premiered earlier this year. The film which was Star Wars lowest box-office earner ever since Disney took over the franchise raked in a measly $392.63 million globally – the lowest since the prequel trilogy movie, the Attack of the Clones and its adjusted $477.5 million earnings.

Though The Meg didn't fare so well among fans and critics, earning a rotten 46 % critic score and 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film did pretty well in foreign theatres. Because the film was co-produced in China, The Meg has nothing but a success in China, a film market which Star Wars has yet to find a proper hold in.

The Meg managed to gather $306.5 million and counting overseas, whereas Solo struggled to rake in $179 million at the box office.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that The Meg is objectively better than Solo. While Alden Ehrenreich's first standalone movie as the iconic Star Wars smuggler bombed at the box office, the film did rather well among fans and critics. Hopefully the film will find larger earnings when it gets its home release.

Solo is set to release on digital HD on September 14 and Blu-Ray on September 25.
