The Last Jedi's John Boyega Recalls ‘Random Checks’ While Flying To The US

There's been discussion about racial discrimination and other uncomfortable experiences on commercial flights after the recent United Airlines overbooking scandal. The incident which left Vietnamese Chinese Dr. David Dao with a "significant concussion" after being ripped off of his seat by airport security has sparked outrage from the global community and many are beginning to open up about their own uncomfortable experiences while flying places.

Even The Last Jedi star John Boyega has been sharing his own troubling airline experiences. In an interview with The Evening Standard, Boyega recalls:"I used to fly back and forth when I was hustling and auditioning for things in LA. I'd get cheap flights and stay there for two weeks or whatever. And every time I was getting these random checks. Every. Single. Time. I wish I remembered the airline because I called them out on it, too. Like, ‘This stuff ain't right'. They said it was a problem Stateside, they gave me a letter and it stopped."

"But before that it was consistent." he added. "I understand that [these things] are for our safety but when you fly a lot and it happens three or four times there's an element of, 'Okay, I'm still not a terrorist'."

Airline personnel and security's treatment of Boyega must be different now that the world knows him as a Star Wars celebrity; however these discriminatory actions should not be tolerated. While of course it is security personnel's duty to keep airplanes and their passengers safe, simply being a person of color doesn't automatically meant that you're out to terrorize the public. There ought to be equal treatment for everyone.

Boyega is set to reprise his role in The Last Jedi along with Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, Benicio Del Toro, Kelly Marie Tran, and Laura Dern.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled to debut in cinemas on December 15, 2017.
