The Happytime Murders: Melissa McCarthy To Star In R-Rated Muppet Murder Mystery

The Muppets have been getting a lot more attention again after the release of The Muppets back in 2011. The Jim Henson Company, apparently plans on producing an R-Rated Muppet comedy, and Mike & Molly star Melissa McCarthy is set to star in the film.

According to Variety, the project had been gestating in development hell for quite a while, but now the project gas enough traction to move forward. The script was written by Todd Berger, and it will follow a detective team of a human and a muppet trying to solve the mystery behind the murder of an ex-cast member of "The Happytime Gang." Expect modern noir elements to make it to the film like car chases and strippers — only with muppets.

If you're curious about what the project could look like, here's some concept art from 2012:

I'm actually pretty interested in the project, and it looks like some great fun. I'm not the biggest fan of puppets, but I always enjoy a good laugh. Have you heard the songs from the Broadway show Avenue Q? I listened to those songs on a loop in high school!

No official release date has been announced for The Happytime Murders.
