The Funny Story How Ellen DeGeneres Learned To Speak Whale For Finding Dory

Dory's whale-speaking scenes in Finding Nemo was one of the most adorably hilarious moments in the Pixar hit, so of course, some whale speech scenes are brought back for Finding Dory, the much anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo.

Apparently though, the story of how Ellen DeGeneres learned to speak whale is funnier than the actual scenes.

During a talk at Google with the Finding Dory cast and creators, the 58-year-old comedienne was asked at one point how she learned to speak the animal's language. Well, according to Ellen, it all began when she was on vacation in Hawaii and the neighbor of the house that she rented constantly did yoga while listening to whale sounds from an album.

Ellen said:

I didn't know you could buy that record, but there's a record that just is whale sounds. And I was listening to it...and it was just the weirdest thing I'd ever seen in my life.

Albeit somewhat unwanted, Ellen DeGeneres learned about whale speech while also getting to have an intimate appreciation for the sounds. By the time Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton asked the TV host to "speak whale" for Finding Dory, it wasn't that hard for Ellen anymore.

However, the whale speech isn't as easy as it sounds. DeGeneres said there are also obstacles to doing whale speech. She said:

It's not easy...if you have to do it a lot it's very, it's tough on your vocal chords. You have to kind of warm up.

I don't know if Finding Dory has a blue whale character like in Finding Nemo, but in previous Finding Dory trailers, we've seen a whale shark named Destiny. During the Google talk, a clip from the movie was shown revealing another whale, a Beluga whale named Bailey, voiced by Ty Burrell.

However, Bailey as well as Destiny know how to speak Dory's language, so I'm assuming Dory and the gang will be encountering a much bigger whale at some part of their journey out in the ocean.
