The Batgirl Story Joss Whedon Wanted To Adapt

Joss Whedon has left the upcoming Batgirl film, with reports claiming that DC and Warner Bros. want to get a female director to work on the project. Whedon also stated that he wasn't able to get a story off the ground, making the split seem mutual. As fans ponder on the legitimacy of that statement and who will be replacing the Justice League director, some have wondered what kind of story Whedon was working on.

According to Variety, Whedon went back to the character's roots and wanted to adapt the Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl.

That's not a marketing advertisement, though it might as well be since that was the name of the story in Detective Comics #359 where she debuted. Obviously, Whedon would have had to take a lot of liberties with the story since it features Batman and Robin prominently. Now that Whedon is out of the film, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Considering how Batman V Superman teased a dead Robin, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to get Batgirl in that continuity. Barbara Gordon could be younger and become a hero after the events of Justice League or be a slightly older ally of Bruce who has grown weary of his war on crime. There are plenty of possibilities.

Batgirl currently has no release date.
