Thanos' More 'Casual', 'Spiritual' Costume in Avengers: Infinity War Explained

Compared to his previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos looks different in Avengers: Infinity War, and the Mad Titan's new look was revealed at last weekend's San Diego Comic-Conand Disney's D-23. During an interview with IGN, co-director Joe Anthony Russo said that it's representative of a philosophical shift for the MCU villain in the upcoming film.

"[Thanos] has a more casual approach in this film, and it's very philosophical for him," Rosso explained at Comic-Con. "It's part of his character definition. It's a spiritual journey for him to collect the Stones, and one with which he doesn't need armor. Once he starts acquiring the Stones, he doesn't need armor in the same way he did when he was a war lord. It's a very symbolic costume."

The image of Thanos also gives us a look at his followers called the Black Order. The Avengers: Infinity War trailer also showed off the Mad Titan's terrifying powers, but Russo revealed that most of the epic sequences from the footage, which show Thanos using the Infinity Gauntlet to destry a planet and throw it at the Avengers, aren't even in the film's final act.

"It's a staggering level of scale in the films. Sometimes we're working on the third act in this movie and I'm like, 'How are we going to pull this off?' It's so big," Russo said. "[Thanos] has this incredible power -- he has universe altering power if he gets his hands on the Stones -- so I think people are going to be surprised at the scale in the movie."

I'm excited to see the epic scale of Infinity War. We haven't seen the Black Order in action yet.

Avengers: Infinity War is set to release in theaterson May 4, 2018, and its yet-untitled sequel on May 3, 2019.
