Tessa Thompson Says Marvel’s “Incredibly Human” Characters Are The Backbone Of The MCU’s Success

There's a lot of reasons why the Marvel Cinematic Universe just keeps winning but for Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson, it's Marvel's "incredibly human" characters that serve as the backbone of the superhero movie franchise.

Doing the press rounds for the home release of Ragnarok, Thompson just recently sat down for an interview with ET about what it feels like to be a part of the MCU which is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary. One of the newer additions to the MCU, Thompson played the Asgardian Warrior Valkyrie in Ragnarok, a character which fans all just seemed to fall in love with.

Though she's one of the new faces in the franchise, Thompson seems to understand the reason why the MCU succeeds, saying that the creation and development of the characters is one of Marvel's biggest strengths.

"Way, before I was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before I dreamt that I ever would be, is that their characters are you know, in epic proportion… These superheroes, these god-like characters and also meanwhile, incredibly human," the actress explains.

According to Thompson, it's this humanity that makes characters like Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) so great.

"I've always felt that the strength of Marvel films are not just, you know, the action sequences which of course we love as audience members, but really dynamically that action that happens between these characters," she adds. "Their friendships, their love stories, their loss. I think those are the things that really tug on your heart and make you compel to really follow characters on their journeys. So I think the same will be true in Avengers: Infinity War. And the truth is the same will be true throughout Phase 4 'cause that's what Marvel does best."

Thompson does make a strong point. The reason why fans just don't seem to get tired of Marvel's many comic book movies is that the studio knows how to write its characters. Avengers members like Tony Stark (Robert Downey) might have an iron suit to help save the world, but underneath it all, he's still pretty much a human.

It's this humanity that gives the MCU so much strength and we definitely can't wait to see more of this emotional weight play out in Marvel's two-part Avengers movie event by the Russo brothers.

Avengers: Infinity War premieres on April 27, 2018 while Avengers 3 hits cinemas May 3, 2019.
