Star Wars The Last Jedi: There May Be More To The Identity Of Rey's Parents

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILER FOR STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI]

The identity of Rey's parents was something fans have speculated over for years since The Force Awakens came out, and with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we finally got some (admittedly disappointing) answers—they're Jakku junkers who sold Rey off for drinking money.

Director Rian Johnson reveals that there could actually be more to the story, and what Kylo Ren thinks is the truth could turn out to be something else. He told Entertainment Weekly:

"I can't speak to what they're going to do. And there's always, in these movies, a question of ‘a certain point of view,'…But for me, in that moment, Kylo believes it's the truth. I don't think he's purely playing chess. I think that's what he saw when they touched fingers and that's what he believes. And when he tells her that in that moment, she believes it."

For now, Rian Johnson isn't in charge of writing the script for Episode IX, but I bet he and the rest of the Lucasfilm story group already have an idea of what has to happen in the last episode of the sequel trilogy. For now, script duties are for J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio to worry about.

Personally, I think the whole point of the reveal in The Last Jedi was that Rey's parentage didn't matter at all, and the Force is something that belongs to all life. I'm actually fine that she isn't some powerful descendant of an old Jedi. It just paves the way for her to make her own story.

Besides all that, I'm pretty sure Rey could be a Kenobi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now out in theaters.
