Star Wars The Last Jedi: Rian Johnson Explains Inspiration Behind The Porgs

While Force Awakens introduced us to BB-8, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is having its own obligatory adorable character in the form of these cute things called porgs. We're going to be meeting these characters on Luke Skywalker's lonely planet of Ach-To, and director Rian Johnson talks about the inspiration behind the creatures.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson says:

"If you go to Skellig (Michael--the island in Ireland where the final scene of The Force Awakens was shot) at the right time of year, it's just covered in puffins, and they're the most adorable things in the world. So when I was first scouting there, I saw these guys, and I was like, oh, these are part of the island. And so the Porgs are in that realm."

A lot of fans are already comparing the inclusion of the porgs similar to that of ewoks in Return of the Jedi, but I think it's safe to say that we won't be having the porgs waging war against the forces of the First Order. A lot of people thought the inclusion of Ewoks on the Battle of Endor made the stormtroopers look incredibly incompetent.

Speaking of Ewoks, does anyone ever forget that when we first meet them, they were about to eat Han and Luke? You think they're adorable teddy bears on the surface, but they're still wild savage bear people who could totally overpower and eat humans. Remember that scene in the end where they're playing drums on stormtrooper helmets? What if there were heads in there? These damn Ewok savages, I tell ya.

Catch the adorable porgs in Star Wars: The Last Jedi which hits theaters Dec. 15.
