Star Wars The Last Jedi: Official Details On The Porgs

Though we meet Luke Skywalker alone in the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he has actually had company with these little creatures called porgs that will make their debut in The Last Jedi. Pablo Hidalgo from the story group has given us some more details on the porgs and what they'll be like when we see them on Ach-To is TLJ.

Hidalgo describes them:

"Porgs are native to Ahch-To, and can be found dwelling along the cliffs of the island where Luke and Rey are. In many ways, they're the Star Wars version of puffins. They build nests. They can fly. Their babies are called porglets… Given how rarely their island has visitors, their curiosity outweighs any skittishness they may have… Ever since that roadside scavenger let out that belch outside Jabba's palace in Return of the Jedi, the idea that there's an entire animal kingdom living amid the drama and adventure of the Star Wars saga is a compelling one. Besides, porgs are cute. You fall into those deep, soulful eyes. I think a lot of people are going to want a porg as a pet."

Director Rian Johnson has also said that the porgs are not Ewoks, but I have a feeling they're in the story to serve the same purpose—be cute and lovable and make kids want to buy porg stuffed toys. Hopefully TLJ doesn't make the mistake of making these porgs go into battle with stormtroopers and making the First Order incompetent beside a bunc of fuzzy penguin-like critters.

I don't really have much to complain about. If Star Wars is anything, it's something people of all ages can enjoy, and I'm guessing these porgs will not just capture the hearts of kids, but also some adults as well.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
