Star Wars The Last Jedi Novelization Hints at Young Han Solo's Character

Though we didn't get the scene in the movie, the novelization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi has a scene where the Resistance mourns the death of Han Solo. Han is going to be the center of the next Star Wars anthology coming out this May, and Leia's eulogy actually hints a bit at young Han's character in the film.

Check it out:

I once told Han that it was tiresome watching him do the right thing only after he'd exhausted every alternative. But sooner or later, he'd get there. Because Han hated bullies, and injustice, and cruelty – and when confronted with them, he could never stand down. Not in his youth on Corellia, not above Yavin, not on Endor, and not at Starkiller base.

We know that Leia didn't really know Han in his youth, but we could probably piece together that Han shared that part of his life when him and Leia got together by the end of Return of the Jedi. Leia continues:

Han fancied himself a scoundrel. But he wasn't. He loved freedom – for himself, certainly, but for everyone else in the galaxy, too. And time after time, he was willing to fight for that freedom. He didn't want to know the odds in that fight – because he'd already made up his mind that he'd prevail. And time after time, somehow he did.

Though it's admittedly sad to see someone like Han Solo die, everyone who takes a look behind-the-scenes will know that Harrison Ford absolutely hated the character, and that he had been pushing for Han's death since RotJ. With Ford getting what he wanted, at least The Force Awakens capped off Han's legacy properly—with him trying to save what was left of his son.

Hopefully the young Han Solo will show us more of this attitude that Leia is describing in the novel.

Solo: A Star Wars Story comes out May 25.
