Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Talks About Expanding Jedi Mythology

One of the problems Star Wars fans had with J.J. Abram's Force Awakens was how it failed to add new elements to the franchise, leaning too heavily on nostalgia and taking too many cues from A New Hope.

With so many anxious that The Last Jedi might do the same and come out as a copy of TheEmpire Strikes Back, director Rian Johnson promises that his sequel to The Force Awakens will try to expand on the mythology of the Jedi for fans.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for its cover issue on The Last Jedi, Johnson talks about how he plans to use the cave paintings (that are presumably found in Ahch-To) to help dissect the history of the Jedi in the sequel trilogy installment.

"Hopefully it will be fun to discover in the context of the movie. My notion was this is a place that goes all the way back. This is where the cave paintings are. The first designs that we had were temples, and I just kept pushing it back and saying, No, think earlier, think earlier. Let's push this all the way back and see how deep we can go into the foundations of where this all started."

With lightsaber battles, missions and ground fights expected in The Last Jedi, we honestly hope that the film takes its time probing into the beginnings of the Jedi order. We'd like to see what Luke's (Mark Hamill) learned in his years of hiding and whether the Jedi has really started tipping towards the center of the light side and the dark.
